oscar pays tribute, but messes up

The 2010 Academy Awards has come and gone, and this year brought us political drama, surprising upsets, crazy costumes, a bomb squad defusing a 20-million-dollar giant... and a tribute to Horror Movies.

Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart seemed like awkward presenters to choose to honour this genre. Yes they are both part of the huge Twilight franchise, but still, they’re both new to the game, and quite nervous/twitchy to be the ones representing it. Ah well. I shouldn’t complain although they did make a huge mistake in their speech.

I agree with what Lautner said: “Although the most popular genre of film is horror, and although it gave a start to the career of a lot of people in this room, somehow it doesn’t command the respect it deserves.” But ruining the validity of that statement, they went on to say The Exorcist was the last horror pic to gain attention from the Academy. I recall both The Silence Of The Lambs and The Sixth Sense received nominations. The Silence of the Lambs won five Oscars its year and The Sixth Sense was nominated for six.

If you missed the Oscars, you can try and find a clip of the horror tribute on-line – but don’t hold your breath. It seems that it’s been blocked on copyright grounds. Aww, come on!
