I think everyone can admit it. Werewolves don't get the respect they deserve. It seems like vampires are all the rage these days. Twilight's box office pull was 191.5 million when it opened. Compare that to The Wolfman and its box office of 62 million, and it's official that people prefer bats to puppies. More evidence of the popularity of the vampires lies in the edgy HBO series True Blood. It's now one of HBO's biggest shows ever, and with other shows like Vampire Diaries on conventional TV and another handful of Vamp movies coming out in 2010 and 2011, it's impossible to deny. Maybe it's not quite time for the werewolf to emerge as victorious, but trust me, the change is coming.
Twilight: New Moon gave a bit more exposure to werewolves (if you can call them that) and the new Twilight: Eclipse should give them even more exposure. The werewolf will make its first appearance in episode 3 of the new True Blood season according to advance synopsis and another American Werewolf movie is coming, The Wolfman is out on DVD and DUSK is playing Ginger Snaps. Plus, I think people are getting Vamp'ed out. Really, there is nothing new here anymore. We get it. They suck blood; they can't go in the sunlight or they'll burn up (or sparkle... ack!); and yeah, they're sexy. I say it's time for the werewolf to show its teeth and get a little more screen time. It's just a little tough to make werewolves sexy - with all that drool and body hair.
