Horror film remakes: love ‘em or leave ‘em. The Fog, a 2005 horror film directed by Rupert Wainwright, is a remake of the 1980s film of the same name by John Carpenter. The film premieres this weekend, Saturday, August 21 at 9 pm ET. So how does the remake compare to the original?

I promise I won’t give anything away for those of you who are excited to catch Smallville’s Tom Welling and Lost's Maggie Grace in this weekend’s premiere. However, what I can say is that the 2005 remake is a bit different: it’s made in the vein of a "teen horror film"—which if you think of the way it was cast, it makes sense—and even the ratings of the two films differ. While the original 1980 film was rated R, the 2005 remake was rated PG-13 (by American rating standards). As a result, the whole vibe of the original movie feels a little different than the remake.

The Fog in the 1980's version is more memorable—since it has an otherworldly, green glow to it—compared to the 2005 remake which is more realistic looking. The problem with this is that the fog doesn’t stand out as much as in the original and is reminiscent to the atmosphere in some natural disaster film such as The Perfect Storm (2000) or Storm (2005). Kind of boring and predictable...

But there are some good, scary scenes!

So in celebration of horror film remakes, I have compiled my list of the Top 10 Horror Remakes (of all time!)

1.     The Thing (1982), directed by John Carpenter. Remake of the 1951 Howard Hawks-Christian Nyby film The Thing From Another World.

2.     The Ring (2001), directed by Gore Verbinski. Remake of the 1998 Japanese film of the same name by Hideo Nakata.

3.     The Fly (1986), directed by David Cronenberg. Remake of the 1958 film of the same name directed by Kurt Neumann.

4.     Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1976), directed by Philip Kaufman. Remake of the 1958 film of the same name directed by Don Siegel.

5.     The Grudge (2004), directed by Takasi Shimizu. Remake of the Japanese film Ju-on: The Grudge (2002) by the same director.

6.     King Kong (2005), directed by Peter Jackson. Remake of the 1976 film of the same name directed by John Guillermin.

7.     The Hills Have Eyes (2006), directed by Alexandre Aja. Remake of the 1977 film of the same name directed by Wes Craven.

8.     The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), directed by Marcus Nispel. Remake of the 1974 film of the same name directed by Tobe Hooper.

9.     Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Remake of F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu (1922).

10.   Cape Fear (1991), directed by Martin Scorsese. Remake of the 1962 film of the same name directed by J. Lee Thompson.

Do you notice how most of the titles have "the" in it?

So what are YOUR favourite horror film remakes? Do they differ from mine? If so, which remakes did you pick (or omit)? Send in your own list to me via e-mail. I will compile the results soon and post them for everyone to see!
