The way I see it, the scariest movies are the supernatural
ones. The idea of being possessed is creepier than a knife-wielding maniac (to me
at least). I know it sounds crazy, but the unknown seems more plausible than a
psycho terrorizing teenagers. It’s like the monster hiding under your bed when
you were a kid. Even though I knew it was unlikely, as a kid I was convinced
that Jafar from Aladdin was hiding underneath
my bed, ready to pull me into his scary underworld if I dared to dangle my legs
a little too long. And for all I know, there’s no guarantee that some
demon won’t come for me in my sleep tonight.
The Exorcism of Emily
Rose is one of those movies that may give you nightmares. Part of its
scare-factor is that it was inspired by real events. Emily Rose is a 19
year old university student who becomes possessed by 6 demons. Played by
Jennifer Carpenter (Deb from Dexter) Emily undergoes an exorcism that has deadly
consequences. Emily Rose separates itself from other exorcism films by
intertwining the creepy possession scenes with the murder trial of the priest
who performed the exorcism.
Laura Linney plays the agnostic defense attorney charged
with clearly Father Moore’s name, and by extension the Catholic Church. Deb, I
mean, Jennifer Carpenter, is very convincing as the young and innocent Emily. Make
sure to sleep with the lights on after watching.
Don’t miss the premiere of The Exorcism of Emily Rose this Saturday at 9pm ET
